Hand-Feeding
This page is provided in the hopes that your parrot, like Amalthea, is friendly and curious, and more importantly, interested in what's going in your mouth.
Wanna treat!!
This is a list of foods that are Amalthea Approved™️. Items marked as "yes" are almost always accepted by Amalthea, and are likely to be accepted by your bird as a part of their regular diet. Your bird's taste may vary, so I recommend trying new foods occasionally. The best practice is to provide home-made foods, or choose foods with as few ingredients as possible.
Never allow your bird to directly share a meal with you. If your bird is tame enough to eat at the table, do not allow them to take food from your plate. This is both to reinforce behavior training, and to prevent poisoning and other problems.
If your bird prefers to eat in their cage, always remove soft, perishable foods (such as rice and egg) after a meal. Best practice implies fresh food should be provided separately from stable foods (such as seeds and pellets).
Never share foods that have toxic ingredients. Chocolate, avocado, cinnamon, caffiene, and garlic are a few off-limits ingredients. Salt and fat are vital nutrients, but should be limited. Some foods must be cooked before serving.
